If you’re reading this because you want to make a lot of money, have amazing sex, and be a total baller, this might be the perfect post for you.
All of this “every person can be extraordinary and achieve greatness” stuff is basically just jerking off your ego.
The last sentence was from Mark Manson, the famous personal development blogger.
You know what?
Screw Mark Manson.
The reality is 70% of billionaires are self-made. Yes, THAT 1% that everyone thinks these billionaires are out controlling all the money.
Before you start ranting off, let me answer your question.
No, they are not controlling the money! We gave them our money. I bought my Macbook Pro from Steve Jobs, my personal desktop from Bill Gates, I go on Facebook twenty times a day (guilty as charged), and bought all my cheap stuff on Amazon.
So what separate us from the elites, the best of the best, “the 1%”?
It’s not their huge yachts, their 40-room mansion, their young beautiful wife, or their washboard abs.
What separates us from them is their habits. Their choices became their action, their action became their behavior, and their behavior became their habits.
These micro-steps of one choice can spiral others to success or down to failure.
People think changing habits is hard. The truth is that it isn’t. You just need the right tools and strategy.
1. The Habit of Being Proactive
Top elites are regular people like you and me. They only difference is they got things done.
Bill Gates didn’t become one of the richest men from sheer dumb luck. In an interview, he said in his twenties he never took a single day off.
Elon Musk the real life Iron Man, said, “If other people are putting in 40 hour work weeks and you’re putting in 100 hour work weeks, then even if you’re doing the same thing you know that… you will achieve in 4 months what it takes them a year to achieve.”
Isn’t that awe inspiring?
We often imagine these billionaire tycoons drinking a martini in their private jet, but the reality is they are most hard working hustlers in the world.
How do you become a world-class hustler?
Well first things first, your mindset and actions have to change from a reactionary to a proactive one.
That means if you see a hot blonde pass by.
You have to take a deep breath. Take a Tic-Tac. Stop thinking and walk up and say hi. We have this mindset that the conditions of our lives are determined.
We use excuses like “that’s how I was brought up”, “I grew up poor”, “I’m not good looking”.
And you know what?
That might be all true. But, the honest truth is no one cares about excuses.
We all want to drive fast cars, a hot girlfriend, be in the best shape in our lives, and make a lot of money. But those are wishes granted for people who are proactive.
Do you know how big of a difference is between proactive and reactive?
This is the difference:
Back when I was a junior in high school, I weighed 115 pounds. I was embarrassed to be small. I couldn’t get a girlfriend to save my life. Even the fat girls rejected me.
Instead of blaming my genes, I used my painful experience to workout. Imagine being a scrawny little kid who was surrounded by gym rats.
Six months later, I’ve gain 30 pounds. It was the best feeling.
An important lesson I’ve learned that year is that by being proactive and exercising, my entire perspective changed.
Instead of making excuses, I started trying to figure out every conceivable way how to make it work.
My language changed from: I don’t have time to exercise to how shall I make time to exercise?
By listening to our language we can use self-awareness to examine them. As Covey says “our language is a very real indicator of the degree to which we see ourselves as proactive people.”
Sometimes, I catch myself using reactive language.
As a pilot, there will moments I will make a hard landing.
I catch my mind saying, “yea it’s not my fault I landed hard. The winds were high.” This is a reactionary behavior. I wasn’t putting the blame on myself. I blamed the wind conditions rather than my flying skills.
The lesson is do not be a passive punk. Take the driver seat and be proactive with your life.
People who are proactive get to live the life they want:
- Instead of waiting for a promotion, they proactively do more work as if they were promoted.
- Instead of waiting to meet the girl of their dreams, they attend social gatherings, go to bars, and actively participate in online dating websites.
- Instead of waiting for people to invite them to go out, they are ones calling their friends for a get-together.
- Instead of wondering what if you fail horribly with a career change, they change anyway knowing they are not living a life full of regrets.
These are things you should think deeply and really ponder.
Ponder in the park, the bathroom, the petting zoo, or the strip joint your girlfriend doesn’t know about. It doesn’t matter really. Just think about these next following questions.
What are your goals, your desires, your dreams?
Now with the current actions, you are taking, where do you do see yourself in the next three months? Year? 10 years?
7 Day Challenge
In the next seven days, I want you to listen to your language and others around. How often do you use and hear reactive phrases such as ‘If only’, ‘I can’t’, or ‘I have to’? And start using phrases like “how can I, how do I”.
Master this habit and the rest of the habits will be easier to achieve.
2.The Habit of Reading A lot
I’m not talking about reading 50 Shades of Lame.
I’m talking about reading good ol’ non-fiction; the kind of books that doctors used in surgery before anesthetics.
Nowadays, nobody reads non-fiction books leisurely.
All they do is hop on the internet and google inverted nipple surgery cost. And when we do read non-fiction it’s usually news about African kids suffering.
I understand it’s hard to pick up a book.
You rather go watch Game of Thrones.
The two reasons why we prefer to watch T.V. is because we are visual creatures.
We process visuals 60,000 times faster than text. And images are the most easily things to remember by our brains and are essential for our learning.
The second reason is were naturally lazy. We don’t want to read after a long day of work.
However, if you wish to live an extraordinary life, you often have to go against the flow that everyone else seems to be following.
You have to follow the overused self-improvement cliche, “Be different.”
I think reading is one of the most undervalued habit.
One single book can contain a life’s work of wisdom and knowledge for the price of $19.99.
Why Read More?
If you want to be successful you have to read. The way you get ahead in life is by reducing mistakes. Reading a lot of non-fiction books is like a superpower.
You are like Neo in Matrix. You see what most people don’t know.
People get rich because they have an information advantage.
People pay fitness trainers because they don’t have clue how to achieve their fitness goals. People pay marketers because they know how to grab your attention.
If you knew how much you can learn and save a lot of money, how much better would your life be?
If you’re willing to fork 50k in college loans, why don’t you pick up a book and educate yourself?
What to Read?
It depends what your goals are.
If you want to improve your life, the best in the biz is 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
If you want to lose weight, I recommend Bigger, Leaner, Stronger.
You don’t want to be wasting your time reading a mediocre book. The problem I see often is most people pick up a new shiny book at Barnes & Noble with a good title and buy it without thinking.
There is about 130 million books printed included with top headline writers and shiny book marketers. You want to be reading the best in each industry. Do your wallet and brain a favor and look up the authors.
Sometimes you will find books made by a journalist for subjects in psychology. Are you serious? I want to read a book by a professional.
Now how do you actually develop the habit to read. Well…
How to Read More?
The truth that helps me read a lot is ….
I love to learn.
If you want these superpowers, you have to want to read. You can’t just search motivational youtube videos and expect to feel the hype.
You need an emergency plan when you don’t feel like reading. You need a system that makes it easy for you to develop.
This is what I personally do.
In the morning, I make coffee, grab a book, and set a timer for ten minutes. After ten minutes, if I have to hustle for work, I put the book away. If not, I continue reading until I feel like stopping.
I don’t care how many pages I’m reading, or which book I’m reading, the fact is I made it easy for me to read.
However, if you can’t find your reason why, well expect someone who loves reading to steal your dream job.
Do you know why Warren Buffet is considered one of the best investors of all time and one of the richest people on earth?
Warren Buffet is a reading machine.
He spends 80% of his day reading. He accumulates knowledge on top of knowledge. Imagine your life how it would be like if you had knowledge of Warren Buffet.
Or imagine you had the knowledge of gaining muscle and losing fat from Arnold Schwarzenegger. How much better would your life be?
What people don’t know is there are books that exactly talk about the secrets of a better life. And there’s a large abundance of books, up to 130 million worth.
Where do I get books?
I personally have a prime Amazon account. The books are cheaper there, ebooks and paperback books alike. It’s also rare that Amazon doesn’t have the book you’re looking for. Plus, they give you good recommendations.
If you do have money to spend on books, but struggling on your discretionary income, go to a used discount book store.
If you don’t have money, there’s the public library. You will be surprised that public libraries do get new decent books. However, I do recommend investing in a book. I find it odd that people sell back valuable books.
Because books aren’t meant to be read once. Seven Habits from Stephen Covey is one of them. It’s a classic. As years pass by, something clicked for me every time I’ve re-read it.
Books do change lives. It might not happen fast. But surely, over time if you read consistently, books would yield 100 times. And that’s a gross understatement.
So hop on the reading train and start your journey.
Really, It doesn’t matter if you are listening to an audiobook, reading on a Kindle, or reading a paperback book.
The main purpose is for you to obtain knowledge and skills to be the best version of yourself.
Reading non-fiction is what most people don’t do.
Don’t be like most people.
3. The Habit of Strategizing
Now that you are someone who takes massive action by being proactive, and your body oozes out Aristotelian knowledge, you need to develop the habit of constant strategy.
People walk through life like zombies. Going to work with no direction where they want to go. Just zombies grasping on hope.
Hoping they will get promoted.
Hoping they travel the world someday.
If you know how to strategize, you will stop being a zombie. Instead, you will be a smart zombie. And start walking towards a life you want.
Do you want to live life by design or default?
Reverse Engineer everything
This is how you strategize your life:
Whatever result you want, you want to plan backward. That means creating a blueprint for a life you want to live.
It’s like building a new house.
You don’t start building one until you have every detail of the blueprint. That should be the same for your life.
The way you create a blueprint is you start with the biggest goal and start breaking them down. Let’s say you want to lose 50 lbs for the year. Well, this is how you break it down.
Good Example of breaking it down:
- What could I do this year to lose 50 pounds?
- What could I do this month now to lose 4.1 pounds? (Math- 50lbs/12months = 4.1)
- What could I do this week to lose 1 pound?
- What could I do today to lose .1 pound today?
See how easy that was. Now you can just apply that to anything and everything. “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail” – Benjamin Franklin
By strategizing ahead of time, you know what moves you need to make.
This is why businesses who cold call often don’t know what they are doing. They don’t strategize their target customers. They are shooting out of the blue to see which poor suck or poor little grandma will take the bait.
I strategize in my life all the time. As a professional pilot, we take a flight test annually.
One of the best tools to prepare is to visualize the flight from start to finish. will rehearse the flight mentally while sitting on a chair. So when I do fly with the examiner, I’m able react and anticipate his every move.
Strategizing is also realizing the obstacles you will encounter. You want to try to prevent misfortunes. This is why we get health, auto, and life insurance. This why we save money for a rainy day.
I can’t stress the importance of strategy.
Know your end goal. Backwards plan. Visualize, where you are headed and anticipate any obstacle you will face.
That is how you can properly design your life.
If you develop and apply these three habits, you will literally become unstoppable.
You will be someone who has the kahunas to take action, someone with deep knowledge through self-education, and someone that can strategize better than Sun Tzu himself.
You want to stop procrastination, strategize your time.
You want to get rich, read how millionaires get rich.
Want to change your career because your job sucks, be more proactive.
These are the underlining habits that success is made of.
Are you ready to destroy the old you and create a better life?
Or are you going to be just another zombie?
